To emulate the funky groove of "The Meters", the band decided to name themselves after one of their songs entitled "Big Chief". The phrase "Midnight Groove" was then added to describe the band's overall sound and vibe. They have gone on to become one of the most energetic and unique bands in New York. Their rock & roll flavor and funky arrangements cook up a spicy groove that is unparalleled.
Big Chief & the Midnight Groove was formed in 1997 and has been "tearin' it up" ever since. The bands eclectic repertoire includes classic blues standards, R&B, funk, reggae, swing, and good old rock & roll. The band features Danny Cavazzi on drums and lead vocals, Glenn Cavazzi on keyboards, Phil Cristofaro on bass and vocals, Phil Lo Presti on guitar and vocals, and Jake Shaw on harmonica.
The boys in Big Chief are known for their on-stage antics, audience participation, and for throwing everything possible into the mix, stirring up a powerful stew of good time party music. This is a style that is referred to as "extreme R&B" by lead vocalist/drummer, Danny Cavazzi.
This band is about THEIR MUSIC and THEIR AUDIENCE and doing whatever it takes to get the party started.
