The origins of Built for One can be traced back to the Fall of 2007 at American University. Singer/Songwriter/Pianist Corey Schneider, a new student at American University, was interested in finding a band, but didn't know where to start. While meeting the students on his floor in Letts Hall, he ran into Robert Lutz, a saxophonist. The both of them began practicing in their floor lounge several times a week.
As Corey and Robert continued playing, word spread quickly that there was a music scene in the Letts Hall first floor lounge. Most Letts residents would see the two playing as the lounge faced the elevator doors. Guitarist Al Smith took notice, and asked if he could join the jam session. As Al eventually became settled in, a month or so had passed when Drummer Geoff Malloy caught onto the band's whereabouts. Geoff's addition solidified that the gathering of the musicians could now be deemed a true band.
The search then went out for a bassist, but by mid October, the band was still empty handed. One night, Corey visited a friend who invited a small group over the room for the night. When Corey's band became the topic of conversation, he asked if anyone knew a good bassist. Bassist Keith Ingram was fortunately in the right place at the right time, telling Corey that he was the man they were looking for. Keith was the missing piece to the puzzle; the band that started out with very little now had everything they could have hoped for.
"Corey Schneider and the Good Times", as they were first called, began their performances at the Georgetown based bar, Grog and Tankard. As the band became more popular, a shorter, catchier name was required. "CS-5" took the spotlight as the new official title for the next several months. CS-5 made their campus debut in 2008 with a front page school newspaper article that gained immediate popularity.
As the band continued performing on and off campus, the band name issue was brought to the table once again. A name was needed that perfectly embodied Corey's message; a name that would make people understand the true meaning behind his philosophy and aspirations. Coreyâs music is built around the theory that life altering experiences, positive or negative, can have the ability to instill an eternal motivation that forces an individual to realize themselves and their upmost potential. This âinner selfâ becomes the foundation for their entire character and helps them discover their limitless human potential. Through the intricate music and poetic lyrics, Corey aims to help people differentiate between their inner and outer selves to create a more focused, determined individual that can positively benefit society. After heavy consideration, the new and final name, "Built for One", became the centerpiece for the ideas that it stood for; The privilege and appreciation for being a living human entity can only be realized by individuals who discover and develop their inner self. This was no longer a jam band-- but a band with a message strong enough to influence each individual throughout the world.
