Music has been a part of Joshua Buchmanâs life for as long as he can remember. His parents immersed him in music, and he reveled in it.
While an undergraduate at Cornell University, Josh sang a cappella for four years with The Cayugaâs Waiters. The group had the good fortune to perform in such exotic locations as Ithaca, Hawaii, and Barbados, and even got to sing with the legendary Stephen Bishop.
Joshua Buchman has taught physics for the Fayetteville-Manlius High School since 1999. As a teacher involved with the Fayetteville-Manlius Science Olympiad Team, Josh has helped the team to win seven consecutive State Championships since 2003, and a National Championship in 2004.
For the past several years, he has written songs to help students learn physics formulas and concepts. The melody and rhythm of each song helps to lock the memory of the lyrics into the auditory cortex. This helps students to learn physics more easily, and decreases the odds that they will make a silly mistake like forgetting to square a value or to take a square root.
His students feel that the songs are helpful, and the 2008-2009 New York Regents Physics Exam results seem to bear this out. Of his 72 students who sat for the test, literally half of his students earned a 95 or above! Five of his students earned 100, and nine others earned a 99.
