Headtrap Music releases new CD from San Diego artist Tristan Luhrs

Two San Diego Musical Talents Unite to Release Sketches of San Diego


San Diego, CA. -- Tristan Luhrs, a self-styled local guitar strummer, has teamed with producer Michael Head on stage and now in the studio as well. Mixing acoustic, rock, blues and hip-hop themes Sketches of San Diego is a twelve song disc telling the story of a modern California southland through the eyes of a Minnesota boy as he sets off to discover his own identity. Tristan fuses his Dylan-meets-White Stripes-meets-Outkast sound in a raw and documentary manner, with Michael creating beats on the fly and adding his musical flavor on a variety of instruments including guitar, Hammond organ, Rhodes electric piano, mandolin, and bass.

What began as a demo handed out to friends, family and for gigs, has been developed into a full length song cycle. The duo was to re-record the songs, but the first demo recordings were âso honest and immediate," says the group, âwe put them in order and listened and there was the sound. They were âsketchesâ that when put together formed a sort of musical framework. We put no time between songs intentionally so they butt together abruptly or they cross-fade a bit. It was like turning the pages in a book." Though professionally produced and mastered, the discs are each handmade and numbered by the band. They will be sold at shows, shared with some press and of course, still given away to friends and family. This is a limited edition pressing of 300.

The songs are a diverse array of sounds. They span from the bombastic rock goodness of âFantastic Journey,â through the slow folky strums and Lou Reedesque words of wisdom of âSketches of San Diego No.1,â to the slippery delta slide of âTrenches Blues.â Tristan and Michael weave country leanings (âLife is too Short,â and âDrug Supplier-countryâ) and dark, bluesy hip-hop beats (âThatâs Y Eye Rhyme,â âHit the Rhodes,â âAngel in the Rainâ) with classic-rock influences and even coffeehouse sing-alongs (âDrunken Spanish-California Delta-Blues,â âKneeâ).

Sketches of San Diego is essentially the first installment of a âCD cycleâ the duo plan on producing based on Tristanâs songs. A rotating cast of the areas finest country rock players have been assembled and have recorded the tracks for the next step in Tristanâs musical concept, Country Rockin' Rebels. They will perform throughout California while Tristan and Michael continue their special live, local acoustic performances.

In the genre leaping images of Kid Rock and David Bowie, and the prolific manner of Johnny Cash, Tristan Luhrs continues his prodigious musical journey, setting the course with Sketches of San Diego.

Tristan Luhrs has performed regularly at the Ocean Beach Farmerâs Market, Long Boarder Grill in Pacific Beach, as well as Gordon Biersch, Joe 'n Andy's and Lestat's. He has also recorded and performed with North County resident, and blues and country artist Rusty King.

Michael Head produces bands, projects and media at his humbly equipped home studio in San Diego. Michael is a graduate of the Guitar Institute of Technology (GIT) and has studied in Hollywood as well as honing his formative chops in the Washington DC area music scene. He also plays guitar with San Diego band Bad Science Fiction.

Headtrap Music is a full service studio, label, and publisher that began in Ocean Beach, California, in 1989. Now located in San Carlos it focuses on music and media production, content creation, song composition and placement.
