WINNER - ALBUM OF THE YEAR - "This is by far one of the best Catholic Christian music CDs I've ever heard. Drive-Thru Jesus beckons self-reflection through thought provoking lyrics. At the same time, the songs seem to be written in a way that you can listen to the songs cranked up on your stereo or quietly with headphones depending on your mood."

"The band Backyard Galaxy sees how we behave toward the wonderful Blessed Sacrament and asks the question, "Why do we treat the Bread of Life like fast food?" Drive-Thru Jesus delivers the message that we should fast from the material things of this life so we can fill up at the eternal feast."

Reflections: This is one of my favorite albums I have ever recorded, mostly because of the collaborative effort that went into it. On our previous release, UNFINISHED, we all wrote different songs, but we didn't really write songs together. This was different. We had found our sound and we went to work. The result was an amazing concept album that was very successful in sales and critical reviews.
We also had some great concerts promoting this album. We headlined a lot of shows, and had the chance to open for a few national acts as well.
Many people have asked why more songs from this CD didn't appear on the SHINING LIKE THE SON: THE BEST OF BOB RICE album. The answer is simple- this isn't really a "Bob Rice" CD. Yeah, I still wrote a majority of the material, but the vibe was different. Even when I was the sole writer on the song, it was still influenced by the other guys in the band. I also didn't want to end the life of the CD by putting too many tracks fo it on the "Best of" album. It's really it's own thing, and worth a listen.
The album is a tongue-in-cheek commentary on the way many people treat their faith: they want it quick, cheap, and easy. The phrase that hits you when you open up the album is, "Why do we treat the bread of life like fast food?" It was also a great gift of the Holy Spirit that, a few months after the album was released, John Paul II declared the Year of the Eucharist. I would get calls from parishes asking, "Is there any way you can have a Eucharistic theme to the concert?" Thanks to the content of this album, we were already good to go.
Some have asked what has happenned to Backyard Galaxy. Well, I guess we're on hold for a bit. Joe Zelek, one of the songwriters and drummer, has started his own solo career and is doing amazing stuff with it. I've been doing lots more praise and worship gigs and have gone solo again, this time with a bluegrass album titled NOWHERE ELSE TO GO. (BTW- Mike, Dan, and Joe all play on the album as well.) So we're taking a break to see where life leads us. Even if we never record an album again, I am so thankful for what we did on Drive-Thru Jesus. From top to bottom it's an album I'm extremely proud to have been a part of.
