His name is Bob Benjamin Zuñiga, a "tico-gringo" born of a Costa Rican mother and an American father. His first CD, âDo You Knowâ, was mostly recorded in Costa Rica by his production company, Traveling Light Music. The music of the movies was an early influence for Bob, who grew up in 1950s and 60s Orange County, California-Hollywood's backyard. His mother, Maria Violeta Zúñiga Campos, viewed life as one big Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers movie and together she and young Bob watched the musicals of the 1930s and 40s. The Beatles were the main influence in his youth. His music and voice are compared more to a mix between Cat Stevens and Neil Diamond.
Bob moved to Costa Rica seven years ago in search of a more tranquil life and the opportunity to sing and write more songs. Since then, and equipped with only his smooth voice and his guitar, he has been charming audiences all over.
When he arrived in Costa Rica, he was lucky to meet Roberto López and Alvaro Esquivel, a music promoter and a producer respectively, who opened doors so that he could perform at The Gran Hotel, the Jazz Café, La Cava in Escazú, and the Marriotts. Later, he tried his luck on the beaches of Tamarindo, Flamingo, Brasilito, Panamá, Potrero, Ocotal and Hermosa where he sings regularly at such bistros as Pasatiempo, the Best Western Monkey Bar, Cala Luna, the Happy Snapper, the Flamingo Marina Resort, Giardini Resort, the Marriott Resorts, Father Rooster and Florblanca Resort in Playa Santa Teresa.
Recently, Bob moved to Lake Arenal. He lives in a tiny village where thereâs a lot more tranquility for writing and producing CDs. In very little time he has become a legend with his romantic and âmessageâ songs in local spots such as Mystica, Rock River Lodge, the Aurora Inn and Las Leñitas.
Since his arrival in Costa Rica, Bob has been very productive and much happier than he was in the States. âReturning to my motherâs homeland was the best decision of my life,â he says with his charming smile. âI feel like Iâve come home and I will always sing my love for my mother and her beautiful country.â
