-Mike Usinger, Music Editor, The Georgia Straight - Vancouver, BC

Vancouver's Kurt Bordian is Canada's latest singer/songwriter/guitarist sensation to come out of the West Coast music scene. His debut album entitled Novocaine is 15 tracks of melodic power-pop rock.

Kurt was born in Winnipeg but grew up in Vancouver. In 1990, looking to get out of the rain, Kurt moved back to Winnipeg, and after trying his Uncle's 1946 Martin D-18, he fell in love with the guitar and began singing and writing songs. Soon he blossomed into the pop singer/songwriter that he is today. In 1992, he co-founded the seminal Winnipeg power-pop band 'Plastered In Paris' and during his tenure there they were awarded a Manitoba Film and Sound Grant to record a three-song demo. They performed locally, and were participants in the 1995 Winnipeg Indie Festival.

The Prairie winters inspired Kurt so much so that he wrote over 75 songs and put out a limited release cassette under the alias Kurt James, entitled Jimi Rox...The World. In 1996, in search of a Starbucks' soy latte, he moved back to Vancouver where he continues to write and perform locally. In 1998, Kurt Live was released independently as an acoustic live album of favorite covers and new original songs, two of which were re-recorded for Novocaine. Since 1998, Kurt has performed in Winnipeg, Halifax, Nashville and Ireland through his travels abroad.

The majority of the songs on Novocaine were written after the release of Kurt Live. His lyrics are deep and insightful, perhaps due in part to being a 'Sensitive New Age Guy'. He shares with the audience some of his "situational relationships"(Dana, Novocaine, Take My Hand as well as some hopes and dreams (Tonight, Ireland, I was a Childi. Although Kurt does not like to pigeon-hole himself by naming influences, he has cited artists that he enjoys listening to. They include The Posies, Teenage Fanclub, The Wannadies, Dinosaur Jr., Tom Petty, 54-40 and Neil Young.

Kurt's new album Novocaine is an impressive and diverse album that people will enjoy from start to finish. Melodic melodies, rhythm guitar hooks and strong deep vocals will keep the listener tuned in.

So what are you waiting for? Pick it up! You won't be disappointed.
