The road calls to all of us.....

Its said that route 66 was the thing that defined us as a people. It was a route to the promised land of California..

The lure of the highway...once more on a trip into the
psyche of a faded America.....

"I've been out there all my life. I roam these streets
late at night. Well I'm just a kid from down the block, trying to find my home in the dark. I'll sing you a song from the highway. I'll play you a tune then I'll be gone. I'll be out there on that highway. I'll be out there on the road tonight."

The American highway is a powerful image. It might be the path to redemption. It might be the your last chance. Or it might be the road down which you almost escape. The highway opens up and the Black River Band takes the listener on a trip that resonates with powerful images and characters.

I guess that it all began in my Dad's 1973 Buick LeSabre. With 2 sisters and one brother I was able to claim the seat right behind my Dad. As I stared out the window on our many trips to Long Island and to his job in Ridgewood Queens NY, I would daydream and think about all the people in the world that drove by our car. Maybe it was the crackle of the AM radio and the bright highway lights that passed through the car.I always loved to look out of my window and see all of the old gas stations and diners that lined the highway... If I think back to those days I would have to say that this is where it all began...on the Highway, the people, the cars, the stories.

Songs From The Highway is a collection of songs that tell a story. All of these tracks are close to my heart have have been around for a long time.Lot's of miles on the highway, and lot's of faces and places. I'm very happy that the band finally got the time to record these tracks, and that we are able to share these intimate stories with our fans. Fred, Rich, Carl, George, and Sal did an amazing job and truly put their heart and soul into this project.

Most of the songs tell a story of America in 2006 and the struggles of everyday life. I once had this conversation with a woman that would take to the highway every 2 weeks to visit her son in prison. "My Son" offers a glimpse into the life of a woman and her son connected by a highway and her dedication and love for her son.

I remember reading a story many years ago about a boy named Eddie Lynn. He was 19 years old when he stepped on a land mine his third day in Vietnam. He never made it back. It took me about 15 years to put his story to music. It was a promise that I made to Eddie many years ago at the Vietnam Memorial in Washington DC.
"Eddie Lynn came home on New Years Day. His mama cried they took my boy away. And late at night she can see him down by the lake, waving goodbye. That War took him away"..

This Album is about a lot of things. Mostly it's about the human spirit. More specifically it's about what happens when people confront the issues in their lives.
In the darkness of the highway people search for their humanity. Some are on the run, while others try to find some peace in the night.

This is why we write and record, we hope that you enjoy the Album...all the best..Mike Garofalo

And the highway opened up...
