One of the most popular Blues Bands in the upper Midwest throughout the â90âs, Milwaukeeâs perennial favorites, The Blues Disciples have resurfaced after stints playing in, and supporting, other bands, and are committed to promoting and touring as a group. Their new release, Under Construction is a well-rounded and powerful effort by the band known for their exciting live performances.
Under Construction encompasses the complete package that a blues album should be. Powerful, driving rhythms, punctuated by the swelling Hammond organ sound. Lead guitars that can bite, soar, or play it pretty. Strong harmonica lines that range from edgy to clean. The 15 original songs are not the standard blues fare, but serve to refresh and renew some of the standard blues rhythms and infuse them with new relevance and originality. The lyrics and song writing are fresh, catchy, and clever, and avoid being blues clichés.
The band is fronted by âBarefootâ Jimmy Schwarz on the harp and lead vocals. Schwarz long known for his trademark voice delivers an exceptional vocal performance and establishes himself as a top flight harp player with this effort. Guitarist Paul Stilin (Lou Pride) also steps out and makes his mark, displaying the mastery of guitar tone and tasty chops that has made him a popular side man for national acts. Bassist and vocalist Kent âThe Colonelâ Knapp (Rev Raven) is returning from New Orleans where he played with fixtures like John Carey and Jack Cole, as well as National acts such as Bo Diddly.
Drummers on the CD include 2 time Handy Award winner Marc Wilson (Anson Funderberg, Marcia Ball), Vic Span (Nick Moss), and Matt Liban. Renowned harmonica Master Jim Liban, appears on two tracks, in addition to New Orleans guitar fixture Jack Cole who brings his stinging telecaster to 4 of the tracks. Ron Kovach is superb, providing the Hammond organ sounds.
