Album Notes:

In 1997 the guys and I decided to join the recording community again and start releasing our own CD's since the music industry was nothing like it was back in '68 thru '72 in Chicago.
Back in '68 our friends, guitarist Ken Utterbach and bassist Frank Petricca of Pacific Gas & Electric (You remember their hit "Are You Ready") introduced us to a mover and shaker in the industry here named Bill Traut. This meeting eventually led to an album and two 45's (you remember those little records with the big hole in the...Ohh forget it!) on Summit Records. Shortly thereafter the major Labels and their people left Chicago, never to return --Yet. Was it something we said?
We decided if we were to leave our mark behind then we had to finance and record it ourselves. So here it goes!!

"No Place To Fade" the title is a phrase I copped off Bob Dylan and it seemed so perfect. This was no place to disappear. We had to "play that funky music, white boys"!
"Stand" is self explanatory and features George Clinton Band keyboardist Vince Willis. He really helped to give it the Gospel feel I wanted. "Fire Alarm" is a great tune we still love to perform today because it enables us to expand on it and take it in so many directions. One reviewer said it has a Van Morrison tone to it, I wonder if he would agree. Lynn Van Matre a journalist once told me Van would either say Yes, No, or "That's Bullshit".
"Millionaire" has a great bass line intro and still expresses how I feel about Love. "Homework" is a strong funk tune with some real snakey guitar (as Tony Joe White used to say). You gotta do your homework, start takin' care of home! "No Place To Fade" has got Harry all over this one. I wanted this one to be a tribute to my favorite piano man-- Otis Spann. "Your Heart Ain't In It" this song got us the most airplay off this CD. I tried putting some humor in the blues here, you can't cry all the time in the blues. "Somebody Play The Blues For Me" is my story in song form. It's all about who I learned from, and another reviewer called it a BOOGALOO. If I ever find another BOOGALOO I'll have something to compare it to.
"Dippin' In" is back to da' funk again. It's got a "Get your hand out of my plate" message. "World Of Trouble" is a song I tried to craft in the Albert King mode. I guess I was successful cause Larry McCray wanted to record this, but got caught up in label contract disputes. Finally "One More Thing" before ya' walk on out the door. "You can stay baby, but that fool has got to go!!

Well thats the story, Rory---We found our Muse, Bruce
I dig this music, I dig these guys, Harry and Gary, who have been with me all along and had faith in my songs. Now I hope you'll continue to dig it too !!! I knew you could.

As silky smooth as it is down and dirty, No Place to Fade, the first CD by Chicago trio Blue Plate Special makes you wonder where these guys have been for so long. Tunes like Homework are reminiscent of the greats like Albert Collins, but roll the ball forward with a uniquely rich, dynamic texture. Taken as a whole, the disc has a very full sound (especially from a trio), with plenty of saturation and few sensory gaps. When Michaels sings, every phrase is a testament. The production is immaculate without being overly polished--everything sounds completely live. No Place to Fade is a superior accomplishment. Bob Gabrella - In The Mix - 1998
