Melodic Indi-Rock
10 MP3 Songs
ROCK: Americana, POP: New Wave
Details:
Pigeon Records is pleased to announce the release of Babbleluck, the latest CD from Portland, Maine artists Bullyclub. Inspired by the hit- or-miss nature of communication, Babbleluck features nine new âcrunch and croonâ originals and one classic cover, a reverent take on the Replacementâs âCanât Hardly Wait.â Bullyclubâs latest is a fine example of a veteran bandsâ spit and polish song-craft, a mature yet restless collection of not quite adult oriented music.
âHard soft rockâ is how primary songwriter Doug Cowan describes the result. âA little alienation, a little arthritis, and a little comfort found in companionship as we try to grow up. Sometimes the comfort part gets neglected in the songs, but there are some smiles in there somewhere.â Evidence of this is found in âTwice on Sundayâ and âDown Lowâ, songs where couples keep bumping into each other on their way to domestic bliss against the backdrop of Mark McDonoughâs sharp guitar lines. Opening track âAssisted Livingâ is an ode to self-pity, an amped-up plea for love and attention. And the acoustic rumble of âRocket,â the CDs first single included on WCLZâs Greetings from Area Code 207 VI, confesses the embarrassment of middle-aged rage accompanied by the measured rhythm of John Nunanâs drums, Josh Denkmireâs bass lines and Cowanâs plaintive melody.
Babbleluck shows some mid-tempo muscle in the jagged guitar cut âShinola,â a wish for somebody elseâs just desserts, and the blistering closer âHeavier than Metal,â a story of teenagers asked to grow up too soon. Finally, the short story form of country music gets its chance in the oh-so-sorrowful betrayal in the song âPaper Cutsâ. For more information about the band, a calendar of upcoming shows and a MP3 sample of the song âRocketâ, currently on the play list of radio station WCLZ, visit the bandâs website at www.bullyclub.net.
