A raw modern jazz recording featuring original compositions with none of the overproduced rehash associated with contemporary jazz recordings.
6 MP3 Songs
JAZZ: Bebop, JAZZ: Traditional Jazz Combo
Details:
This is the third album by drummer/bandleader Aaron Binder. This is a down to earth hard bop recording of five original compositions played by the quintet of tenor, trumpet, piano, bass, and drums and one trio number for good measure. Featured are John D'Earth, Jeff Decker, Scot Fitzsimmons, and the piano of the legendary Hod O'Brien. As one of the few remaining authentic bebop pianists left alive, O'Brien is often called upon to record trio sessions and has been prolifically doing so for many years. It is not so easy to find him in a quintet setting such as this. Right at home in the rhythm section, his comping is perfect and his solos are a brilliant expression of bebop piano at its most pure. His playing has been compared to Barry Harris and Kenny Drew and is one of the last of his kind. John D'Earth is simply one of the greatest trumpet players alive and his relative anonymity is a travesty. This recording session began after midnight on January 24th, 2000 and was recorded directly to a vintage reel to reel tape machine in a large hall which was chosen for its acoustics and its piano. The result is a straight forward jazz recording with guts.
