POP: British Pop, ROCK: Modern Rock
Details:
With intensity and a confident snarl, five musicians converged in Portland, OR and in March 2006 formed BlackHeart WhiteNoise. Less than five months later, they have completed a full length self-produced CD while word spreads about engrossingly dark and energetic live shows. Pooling an eclectic mix of influences, including Nick Cave, Oasis, Primal Scream, The Psychedelic Furs, and Hunter S. Thompson, BlackHeart WhiteNoise create a shimmering blend of haunting, hypnotic melodies, energetic alt.pop, and intellectual art rock.
The music on their first self-titled release surges forward from the unrelenting opening track, âOur Lives in Black and Whiteâ and the hip shaking rock anthem âGuest List,â to darkly alluring tracks like âDecemberâs Childâ and âPanomineâ to the deeply cathartic âFeel Good and Shineâ and back again to optimistic sweet pop melodies on âPicture Perfect Worldâ and âThe State Weâre Inâ. Itâs a bit of a wild ride thanks to the distinct and otherworldly C. Arden Hinds (vocals). Sounding a little bit and nothing like such alt.rock icons as Richard Butler, Iggy Pop, and David Bowie, Hindsâ vocal rants, intense crescendos, and gritty lamentations are perfectly set against BlackHeart WhiteNoiseâs unrelenting guitar riffs, propulsive bass lines and huge wall of sound created by Dano Capristo (drums), Michael Pieretti (guitar), Chance Hausler (guitar) and Connar Gilles (bass). The music is in constant movement with the band showcasing their inspirations by drawing from such diverse sources as discordant post-punk to pop-tinged anthemic rock, often in the same song. It is a rewarding listen, as lively and intelligent as it is unique and challenging compared with many of todayâs cookie cutter releases.
Prior to moving to Portland, Hinds performed and wrote with the Philadelphia band Dandelion (Columbia Records). One night in 2005, after relocating to the Northwest, Hinds found himself engineering tracks at Stiles Music (Dandy Warhols, Pink Martini) for what would be his future band, at the time incarnated as popular local rockers, My Regrets. After the bandâs demise, most of the former members continued writing instrumentally, developing their sound until finding a shared musical vision with Hinds as the charismatic front man to deliver it. As music lovers with similar record collections and the ability to share co-writing duties to a collective end, BlackHeart WhiteNoise was born. The infancy was short lived as the band immediately began to command stages, tearing itself an original niche in the crowded Portland music scene and earn a growing fan base. They guys live for overdriven amps, melody laced with feedback, and delivering an authentic and original performance in hopes their record might touch you, and their show move you.
Their self-released debut CD is ambitious: the songs explore both ends of the continuum with regard to joy and grief, denial and acceptance, life and death ⦠black and white. With the experienced shine on their self-titled full length, and the ability to bring it alive in an uncompromising and memorable live performance, itâs no surprise youâll be hearing more of this band soon.
BlackHeart WhiteNoiseâs self-titled full length CD is available for purchase from CD Baby (www.cdbaby.com) or download through iTunes (www.itunes.com).
