Details:
Sure, lots of bands have made a new sound by marrying a couple of genres together, but with Beehive, weâre talking about some serious musical polygamy. Call this explosive Seattle duoâs music ârocktronicaâ if you must have a pigeonhole, but one listen to their driving, flowing, hook-laden songs and youâll hear how pointless categories can be.
With leonine vocals and riveting rhythms from Butterfly Beats (aka Alethea Eichhorn) and a surging rock thrust from the slide guitar work of David Miller, Beehive has set the Seattle music scene buzzing since their first performances in 2003. Their 2004 CD Cycle A was a critical darling, and the release of the duoâs new EP Operation Artichoke is already setting airwaves and earwaves a-tingle.

Electro and rock are the core influences of Beehiveâs upbeat tunesâlisten for flavors of Depeche Mode, U2, Chemical Brothers, New Order or Ladytronâwith a heavy emphasis on lyricism and songwriting. Theirs is music that can snare your brain and your heart all the while that itâs kicking your body into dance mode.

Beats is the performing octopus of the group, juggling laptops, keyboards and the occasional tambourine or harmonica, while serving up the the bulk of the vocals in a voice that rips with strength yet grips with emotion. Meanwhile, Miller on guitar, slide and bass channels the essences of Ben Harper and Sonny Landreth, with dashes of Hendrix and the Edge, adding a classic rock attitude to the cutting edge electronica. The result is a pop/electro/dance/rock drug so addictive it ought to be a controlled substance.

It may not take a couple of neurobiologists to cook up a brand new sound like this, but it doesnât hurt. Beats and Miller discovered their musical chemistry while studying neurobiology together at a Seattle university. Not long after theyâd finished their studies, the two realized that the real science in their future could only be in the laboratory of sound experimentation.

They started to record songs that they wrote together in a back-and-forth process, each layering on some new idea, melody or riff. Eventually, they took their work public, and found themselves performing at clubs and festivals throughout the Pacific Northwest. Their high energy live shows earned them a devoted following, and they started to get radio airplay with the release of Cycle A. âKaiser So-Say,â an instrumental track thatâs included on Operation Artichoke, was picked up by MTV for use on The Real World and Road Rules. Beehive is now gearing up for a West Coast tour in the spring of 2006 that will include shows in San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Seattleâs KEXP radio calls Beehive âdefinitely one to keep an eye on,â and Static Factory Media calls them âfar ahead of the pack.â They may be a band without a genre, but when their music gets into your head and wonât let go, you wonât care about the name of the road youâre onâyouâll just be glad youâre along for the ride.
