Aaron Lington's "Cape Breton" fuses the aggressive style of 50s and 60s hard-bop with the sophisticated compositional approach of modern jazz.

7 MP3 Songs
JAZZ: Traditional Jazz Combo, JAZZ: Bebop

Details:
The album "Cape Breton" features seven compositions by composer and saxophonist, Aaron Lington. This album also features the talents of Paul Tynan (Trumpet/Flugelhorn), Dahveed Behroozi (Piano), John Shifflett (Bass) and Tim Solook (Drums).

"Cape Breton" is a beautifully recorded small-group jazz album in some ways reminiscent of the traditional small groups of the 50s and 60s but with more emphasis on modern harmonies and compositional ideas. The strong compositions, masterful solos, and the use of the seldom-heard baritone saxophone along with trumpet/flugelhorn instead of the traditional two-horn lineup make this album a unique product in the sea of new music.

The Album was recorded in San Jose, California in May 2005.

Aaron Lington currently resides in San Jose, California. He holds a Masters (MM) and Doctorate (DMA) from the University of North Texas and is a professor of Jazz Studies at San Jose State University.

Quotes:
Baritone saxophonist Aaron Lington was revelatory. He obviously relishes the beautiful, blustery bark of his instrument and his solos careened through the music, rubbing against the orchestra.
--San Jose Mercury News

...Lington and his companions are topnotch musicians...these gentlemen are by no means amateurs, and this is a pleasurable album of largely mellow yet invigorating post-Bop Jazz.
--Cadence Magazine, August 2006

Great writing and playing all around!
--Wayne Bergeron

Aaron Lington has a distinctive voice on the baritone saxophone. He plays it with the grace and precision of a smaller horn. His ideas are filled with the richness of the saxophone tradition, yet are uniquely his, presented in a modern framework. Lington's compositions have interesting melodic shapes and colorful harmonies. His playing and his composing deserve to be heard and experienced by a much wider audience. Hopefully with his new CD, Cape Breton, he will do just that.
