Let's face it... we all can't be famous artists. Someone has to be bad in order for someone to be good. Someone has to be better. Your goal is to BE BETTER. First of all, you must be a good artist to even think about becoming famous. Although, some may argue that with technology these days, "anyone can do it." Well, if you're lucky enough to know someone that can do all that for you, this book is not for you. This book is for the hardworking artists that strive to be great at what they love. Let me break it down for you: 1. You must love rapping, singing, or whatever you do. 2. You must be able to spend hours every day working in some aspect of the music industry. (This can include just listening to music ) 3. You must be willing to devote your life to your passion. 4. And most of all, you must be good at what you do! You have to be a good artist in order to make it big. Note: What decides how much success you will have is how many of these things apply to you and to what degree. No matter what your unique s tyle is, you must be good at it. Maybe you're a great vocalist and you have a large range to play around with. Or, maybe you rap really fast... Whatever you do, give it your best. Now, I don't mean to discourage any new artists, but you need to practice every day and perfect your skills before you can think about becoming famous. Once you think you've got what it takes, it's time to create your first hit single. In order to create a hit single you must attain detailed knowledge about every aspect of a song. In order to better describe these details I will be comparing a song to a car. With that said, let's begin. A song is like a car and the beat is like the chassis and the body of that car. The chassis holds the car together like the beat holds the song together. The beat is also like the body of the car. It's the part that looks nice and is what people see when you drive by. Note: When I say "beat" I mean the instrumental of the song (which is the part with no vocals). Without the chassis, the car has no structure. The chassis is the base of the car. Without a good base, the structure is then diminished. If your song doesn't have a good beat, the basic structure of your song is wrecked. If your car has an older chassis, it may fall apart later on down the road. If you have an older beat, your audience may get sick of the song because they have already heard beats like that in the past. Just like your body style, if it's really old, it is usually not liked as well as a new, more modern one. If you want a great car all-around, you need a good body style and a good chassis. To some things up, the beat of your song is the structure and style which holds your song together, and attracts the attentions of listeners. Now you're probably thinking, "I already know I need hot, new beats," but the truth is most artists don't take the time to buy the right beats and often end up wasting their money on a "hot beat" they like. That "hot beat" ends up having a weak structure and an old s tyle that takes a big nose dive really fast. So, how do you know what the perfect beat is? Well, it's not the easiest thing to figure out. If you've read this far then you are serious about making it big as an artist. This is more than just downloading a free beat off the internet. There are a ton of things to look for in a beat including tempo, key, range, progression, quality, length, structure, affect, originality, style, etc. Let me explain a few of these for you: Tempo usually measured in BPM (Beats Per Minute) Ask yourself: Can I rap to this tempo? Can I really rap that fast while still sounding good? Is the tempo too slow to where I'm dragging out my lines? Try and rap at a slower pace on the beat and then normal and then fast. Are any of those good? Key The overall pitch of the song Is it too high? Too low? Again, "test drive" the beat by rapping or singing to it. Range The variety of pitch in the song Do the notes go too low for you voice? Too high? You must be able to hit all the notes perfectly so if you your range is limited, either make changes on your part or find another beat. |
