MERCURIAL MUSICIAN ANDREW PRIMMâs DEBUT
To be sure, Andy Primm is one of Santa Feâs premiere musicians- as likely to don KISS makeup and spandex and play at an outdoor festival as a coat and tie to sit in with an Aid and Comfort ensemble- whose musical talent is always in demand. That talent, that ability to skip from one genre to the next, that knack for poppy songwriting, proves quickly noticeable on MERCENARY, his new CD. The disc kicks off with âEverywhere,â an upbeat little jazz-lite love song, odd in its harkening to⦠Michael McDonald FM jams, of all things. Itâs a sweet little tune, but not a rocker.
The rockers come later, starting with âStay Stacey Stay,âa perfect piece of pop confection if ever there were one. With an opening guitar riff that evokes Rick Springfield and Asia (!), synthesized strings and more hooks than a tackle box, âStayâ is one of Primmâs best songs. Ditto the keyboard-based âMolly Ringwald,â a musical embodiment of every John Hughes film ever made, a danceable ode to teen angst and good soundtracks. âMollyâ is followed by the wire-y â80s-ish âWhere Have U Been,â a song of betrayal that would be heartbreaking if it werenât for its infectiousness, addictive background vocals and rockinâ guitar solo by guest guitarist Mikey Baker.
What marks MERCENARY most is a certain confoundedness amidst all the simple (at least on the surface) pop. Whether intentional or not, there is an â80s feel to the disc, and itâs tough to solve the puzzle: Who is this guy? An FM jammer? A Prince acolyte? A John Hughes fetishist?
The answer is: it doesnât matter. Primm stuns in his songwriting ability, his clear addiction to his craft and his balance of irony and sheer glee. In fact, the answer, then, is this: Just put the disc on and dance.

âPrimm and properâ
Local music news just keeps getting better. Just days after my interview last week with Noah Devore (Keyboard), local musician Andy Primm- of Amazing Larry, the Gluey Brothers, and Love Gun fame- arrived at my Cerrillos road office with a copy of his brand-spanking-new, self produced CD titled MERCENARY. The 10 tracks are 100 percent original works by Primm, with the help of a few local musicians. Lehra Gordon (Amazing Larry) lends her skills to most of the recordâs bass sessions, while F. Michael âMikeyâ Baker (Love Gun, The Gluey Brothers) attacks a few tracks with his guitar skills. Drummer Bjorn Hamre manages the skins on âCasinoâ, one of my favorite tracks on the record; it carries a funky Elvis Costello/Elton John/The Jam vibe that makes for an addictive listen.
Parts of the record are poppy, others are smooth, and others just rock the hell on. Some songs take power rock to a completely new level, the likes of which will surely make Ted Nugent pe in his buffalo loincloth and Journeyâs Steve Perry cry in his Zima.
