His story
The Phoenix, we all know the story, a mythical bird that lives its life and then burns fiercely and is reduced to ashes, from which a new young phoenix arises and is reborn anew to live again. As cliché as it may sound, the story of Matthew Phoenix shares a profound similarity.
Born into an environment rarely experienced his upbringing is one worthy of the best writers and filmmakers. His first experiences were in the woods in a fierce environment complete with wood stove and rain barrels. He was surrounded by music at an early age and found his singing voice early and seemed destined for greatness. Singing and performing came naturally and ultimately brought him an agent and even provided an opportunity to share the stage with the legendary Buddy Knox. This rise to stardom was thwarted by an inability to retain lyrics and remain consistent and on task. He walked away and pursued other opportunities but never quite found his stride.
In August 2004 the reasons for these challenges became clear. After collapsing at his motherâs home Matthew was rushed to emergency where they discovered a brain tumour that had been growing in the centre of his brain and may have been there since birth. He was told that it was inoperable and advised to return home, make arrangements and say good-bye to his family and his then 4 year old son a moment no person ever wishes to face. He stood strong accepting his fate. A sudden turn of events brought the call from a local surgeon who had pioneered a technique that he felt could save Matthewâs life and he was rushed immediately to undergo open brain surgery. On the table Matthew left our world and has distinct memory of this experience. He ultimately returned and awoke anew.
His journey as this new Phoenix required a huge re-learning curve and he was advised that he would likely never be able to have a normal life again, that even the simplest task could remain a challenge for him for the rest of his life. But Matthewâs experience remained strong in his mind; his knowing that his gift was meant to be shared brought him back to his love of music. He slowly began to sing again and stunned audiences with the beauty of his voice, choosing songs that reflected connection and inspiration. He picked up a guitar and learned to play again, hours and hours of repetition to learn even the simplest chord structures and then he began to write, âLife is goodâ, âRoad to meâ, âTime keeps chasingâ and âLittle Boy Blueâ and so on. His family, friends and early fans watched as he grew as an artist and songwriter and were blown away by his progress and were captured by every new song.
His fans waited patiently as he walked through the process of completing the recordings and the creation of the amazing artwork worthy of his music. And now it is here, the Phoenix stands ready to take flight and expose his heart to the world.
