Back in the Eighth Grade, I loved the Beatles, the Dave Clark Five, the Beach Boys â I even had a special thing for Petula Clark.... But I wore out my copy of Milesâ E.S.P.! When my interest in music, and jazz in particular, was reawakened a few years ago, I suppose itâs fair to say that I didnât know what I was getting into. Man, what a trip ! First, I went out and bought a drum kit, and began to play. Started to sing, met some great musos, and started to play a few local gigs. All the time I listened...and listened....and listened. To tunes Iâve loved forever, and some Iâd never heard. To bop and to ballads, old and new. To Frank and Tony, Mel and Chet â to me, no one ever sounded as sweet as Chet. I listened to Betty Carter, Nancy Wilson and Shirley Horn, and to Ella and Sassy. And to Kurt, Dianne, and Diana. So I suppose this album represents the next step on this wonderful journey, a way for me to pay homage to these great singers and songwriters, whoâve brought us all so much joy. Some of the tunes are standards, some are âunsung heroesâ. (Oscar Levant once labeled his own Blame It On My Youth a âminor standardâ â I think itâs one of the prettiest ballads ever). Joining me are three of the finest NJ jazz musos - Bob Rodriguez on piano, Lou Pappas bass, and Jon Berger on drums with the soulful tenorist Phil Chester joining in on two ballads.
