Details:
While David Gerard's debut CD, "Compositions"
was a compendium of sorts, "Ambientism" is
his first full-length concept album. The CD
is anchored by two ethereal instrumentals,
featuring actual lunar transmissions provided
courtesy of NASA. Gerard has expanded his
sonic palette here, including more use of
ambient guitar and combining analogue with
digital keyboards. The usual influences are
here: shades of Eno, Budd, Froese, and Nelson.
But Gerard has also expanded his musical
idioms as well - some pieces are playful
excursions into electronica, others are
contemplative, almost meditative melodies
that utilize counterpoint and layered
voicings in a manner that reveals Gerard's
genius as a composer. A burgeoning maturity
and heartfelt reverence for experimentation
make "Ambientism" a sequel that more than
delivers on the promise of its predecessor.
