A Brief History:
A child of both formal music studies and acid jams in suburban basements, singer songwriter Dan Goldman moved to Toronto from Montreal in â98 and formed Kitchenmusik w/Mike Olsen, Paul Mathew, Rob Piilonen and Ryan Martin -- a band best described as the illegitimate love child of Joni Mitchell and Bill Frisell. Together they made two recordings (the second of which was produced with Michael Philip Wojewoda) before disbanding in 2002. In addition to performing with Kitchenmusik, Dan also played guitar in the bands of Mia Sheard, Justin Haynes and Rob Piilonen ...quot; all of whom had a major impact on Danâs writing.
In spring of 2004 Dan released âThrough A Revolution,â which features Sheard, Haynes and Owen Pallett (Final Fantasy), among a slew of others. In this collage-based production, underwater imagery climbs to the surface aided by phased drum loops, while garbled radio signals and sampled clarinets recreate the urban soundtrack of the Montreal subway system. Some songs are postcards from childhood, while others recount the litigations of love in a hushed and patient way.
Heâs also written scores for Dusk Dances and for the Toronto Dance Theatre as well as co-producing recordings with Breaking Sounds and Jack Breakfast. Heâs toured the UK, Ireland and Canada with Mia Sheard; across Canada and the US both solo and with his current band-mates bassist Paul Mathew and drummer Kevin Brow; he's appeared on recordings by Veda Hille, Mia Sheard, Beyond The Pale, Ronley Teper and has shared stages with kindred spirits Veda Hille, Kurt Swinghammer, Bob Snider, Martin Tielli, John Southworth, Great Aunt Ida, and Snailhouse. He also currently plays piano in Toronto indie rock group Maps Of The Night Sky.
