JAZZ: Traditional Jazz Combo, JAZZ: Jazz Fusion
Details:
Canadian vibraphonist Dan McCarthy spent the first 18 years of his life engaged in one form of musical studies or another, before finally entering the Jazz Programme at Torontoâs Humber College of Applied Arts and Sciences. It was there that Dan had to opportunity to study with some of Canadaâs elite, such as multi-instrumentalist Don Thompson, and saxophonist Pat Laberbera. Dan completed his diploma cum laude, and instantly began his career performing with his former teachers, mentors, and peers around Canada and the United States. Former Director of Jazz Studies at Humber College says that Dan is âa person that Toronto and Canada will want to take a lot of credit for in the near futureâ. Don Thompson calls Dan âa serious talentâ.
In 2004, Dan made the move to New York City, where his career continued to flourish. Within his first year in New York, Dan had performed with some of the best musicians the city has to offer, including saxophonist Myron Walden, flautist Jeremy Steig, fellow Canadian trumpet player Ingrid Jensen, and most recently shared the stage during IAJE at Birdlandâs After-Hours JazzCornerJams with Gary Bartz and Robin Eubanks, among others.
Most recently, Dan has just completed his debut record, INTERWORDS, which includes trio members Matt Wigton on bass and Greg Ritchie on drums, and features saxophonist Myron Walden. The CD was released in March to great reviews from critics and fans alike. Geoff Chapman, jazz critic for Torontoâs biggest newspaper, The Toronto Star, calls the CD, which contains all original material ââ¦excellentâ¦the liquid McCarthy sound and original writing are superbâ. George W. Carroll, from ejazznews.com, says that âDan possesses a truly attractive yet modern sound as he immerses us into his world⦠He exhibits an apparent inexhaustible ability for artistic invention.â For more information, including news and upcoming performances, as well as information on how to purchase the CD, visit Danâs website at www.danmccarthy.net.
