Details:
From the ashes of some of the Jersey Shore's most beloved underground bands comes DIGGER PHELPS.

CHARLIE WOODLEY (guitar/vocals) and CLINT GASCOYNE (drums) were longtime contributors to jangly pop outfit, COUNT 210, a Red Bank based band that had the honor of opening for THE CONNELLS, AIMEE MANN AND SLOAN, among others. After the band broke up in 1997, MICHAEL MARTIN (guitar), formerly of New Brunswick's 8 OHM DRIVER, suggested Mr. Woodley finally take center stage after 7 years of sharing the spotlight in Count 210. A chance meeting at a wedding presented an opportunity for Mr. Gascoyne to approach CARL ARCHER (bass), formerly of FUZZ THE WORLD (who had shared the stage with WEEZER & JEFF BUCKLEY), about getting together to see what might come about. The band clicked and started writing new material and gigging regularly in clubs from South Jersey to New York City.

DIGGER PHELPS has just recently released their first full-length CD, "See You In May". The record contains a dozen brand new songs, plus the "secret" track "Marcy" all recorded at Dog Haus Studios with Andres Karu of Reprise Records' Love In Reverse.

Mr. Woodley's lyrical knack for tapping into the human condition is apparent in songs like "After Hours", "Homecoming" and "A Better Place," all true representations of the band's pop sensibilities, while tracks such as "Blink", "Warm December" and "Everyone You Are" each show a different, darker, yet still hauntingly melodic side of the band's repertoire. Each song on the record features Mr. Woodley's sure touch with a melody, the band's knack for exciting and unusual arrangements (check out the off-time riffs on "Waiting for the Palms"), and a craftsperson's touch with dynamics, light and shade.

"See You In May" is a poised, assured record, one which rewards repeated, close listenings, yet is also immediate and memorable from the start. A group resistant to trendy style jumping, (check out the poke-in-the-eye snarl of "Bargain Bin") yet informed by their love of music, DIGGER PHELPS and "See You In May" are sure to garner repeated plays in any listener's "mental jukebox."
