The Degrees are the soundtrack to a social scene -- they're the band you want to hear on a night when you and your friends are in the mood for great music without having a lot of attitude tossed at you from the stage.
The band's sound is a delicious hybrid of low-fi/indie pop and good ol' slap-you-on-the-ass rock. Their songs are melodic, never mopey or poseur-ish.
Singer Lino Fernandez's voice is like that thing you feel when you're driving towards certain heartache on a summer night, and canât wait to get there. Yeah. It's that good. His vocals are carried by a band that knows when to keep it tight and when to play it fast and loose. Brother Reylan also uses his punk-rock pipes to sing a few tracks.
Like most good bands, The Degrees weren't manufactured by a producer or a record label. They came about from the very real need group of guys felt to hang out, drink beers and play music.
Reylan, Lino and Andy grew up in Tacoma, and met Ken while Reylan attended Western Washington University in Bellingham back in 1995. The four friends had eclectic tastes in music: Lino loved the Cure and Dinosaur Jr., Reylan was a Clash and Misfits fan. Ken, who grew up in Chilliwack, B.C., had a thing for working-class tunes of the two J.C.'s -- John Cougar and Johnny Cash, while Andy studied the Hard Rock style of Motley Crue and Poison.
The bandâs music has been played on Seattle's KEXP 90.3 FM, Olympia's KAOS 89.3 FM, Spokane's KYRS 95.3 FM, Rochester NY's WITR 89.7 FM, Baton Rouge's KLSU 91.1 FM, and more.
The Degrees have just released their first full-length, "Instant Gratification" on Bearded Monkey Records.
