Dee Robinson's Black Pearls

This CD has something for everybody! It is a virtual cornucopia of song.

The CD "The Voyage" by the Black Pearls was conceived during Dee Robinson's birthday party when several singers came forth and performed songs in her honor. Each person sang in their own style, and there were many. One person sang R&B followed by Opera followed by the Blues and so on. It was all impromptu, which made it all the more beautiful.

A couple of days later, the CD project was mapped out and then set in motion. Dee collaborated with music producer the N'Visible Man. Sometimes her words came first, then he gave her music. Sometimes his music came first, then she gave him words. Then the search was on to select the right voices for each song, and the singers came forth. Everyone's creative juices blended together and birthed beautiful black pearls-gems-in the form of "The Voyage".

Each Pearl was selected based upon the texture of her voice, the genre, and song topic. The voices range from Tonya Taylor's soft, sensuous voice to Bonnie Harvey's strong, commanding voice singing both Blues and Gospel. Carla C# Gomez presents a jazzy twist with incomparable vocal arrangements. Artra Veal provides a stirring rendition of the inspirational song "It's Never Too Late". Erin Bleu's unique soprano stands out on "Maybe This Time". Jasmine brings serious grown folks flavor as she sings a song of unrequited love. Lisa Ford makes you feel her anguish singing "Sometimes Right Now". Thressa Gardner leaves you yearning for more with her rendition of "Summertime". And violinist Delores Major demonstrates why she is considered the best jazz violinist in metro Atlanta.

As a storyteller, Dee Robinson created each song as a story in motion. Twelve tracks that range from grappling with societal issues and spirituality to exploring several facets of love, life, and the sanctity of womanhood. This concept coupled with the unique sound of each Pearl's voice aptly captures the essence of their chosen genre.

Conceptually, the Black Pearl project began as a homage to the spirit and talent of African American womanhood as expressed through various musical genres. Sacrifice, suffering, sensuality, strength, with a touch of sassiness are prominently featured throughout the lyrics that move, intrigue, and soothe. There are many Black Pearls who paved the way for the present generation of Pearls--such as Bessie Smith, Aretha Franklin, Marian Anderson, and Sonya Sanchez. Dee Robinson herself is a true black pearl--black as in deeply rooted in the cultural elements of her African ancestry, and she is named after her two grandmothers who were both named Pearl.

Artistically, The Voyage is the perfect blend of words so meaningful and music so powerful as to produce a lasting impact after the first pleasurable listening experience. Together the N'Visible Man as producer and Dee Robinson as writer have given a classic gift of song and spirit.
