La Rondalla Segoviana:
Preserving and Promoting Musical Heritage in Las Segovias, Nicaragua

Rondalla Segoviana is a music group that plays traditional music of the Las Segovias region of Northern Nicaragua. Based in the small town of Estelí, Rondalla Segoviana has an underlying mission of preserving and promoting the musical and dance heritage of the rural campesino peasants who live in the hills of this sparsely-populated region bordering Honduras. Once common to the area, the waltzes, mazurkas, and polkas in Rondalla Segovianaâs repertoire are straining to find a foothold as the local airwaves, restaurant sound systems, and cassette stands are flooded with Mexican ranchera music and popular culture from the United States.

This CD, recorded in Estelí in November 2004 serves as the basis for a project rooted in the band's goals of preservation and promotion. Through the project, Rondalla Segoviana has set out to fulfill four distinct goals: 1) document the music via a high-quality archival recording, 2) produce a broadcast-quality recording for use on radio stations in northern Nicaragua, 3) create a CD (with accompanying sheet music) to facilitate learning among young students and spur the creation of new music based on traditional styles, and 4) provide a recording that could be used to teach traditional dances where live accompaniment wasnât available.
