- Performing Songwriter Magazine

With nine CDs, fifteen road years and over eighteen hundred shows to his credit, LaMotte has written songs on almost every topic imaginable. Within that wide range of subject matter, though, there has always been a thread of conscience, calling us to consider our actions or lack thereof and inspiring us for the work we need to do.

Though best known as a touring musician, LaMotte has also performed, keynoted and taught at numerous progressive events, including work with world-changers as prominent as Desmond Tutu, John Fife and Walter Wink. His peacemaking efforts have taken him from Bosnia to Belfast. He has developed and taught writing workshops for survivors of the Columbine school shootings as well as a retreat for pastors on the relationship between art, spirituality and politics. David has presented workshops on three continents for organizations as diverse as the Songwriters Association of Washington, the Guitar Association of New Zealand, homeless outreach centers, and the Research & Design department of a computer firm. He has also been a visiting lecturer at several colleges and universities.

In the midst of his extensive touring schedule, LaMotte has made the time to launch a non-profit organization, PEG Partners, Inc. (www.pegpartners.org), which works to improve learning environments in Guatemalan schools. In 2005 PEG funded the creation of a computer lab for the children of Pachaj, Guatemala, and in early 2006 a new preschool opened in the town of Tzanchaj, built entirely with donations collected at LaMotteâs concerts, and named in his honor.

This CD project release coincides with his appearance at a large anti-war rally in Berlin in March of 2006, and consists of a retrospective look at some of his topical songs on peace, justice and hope over the course of his career. It comes in a cardboard sleeve without extensive liner notes or a jewel box, and is therefore less expensive than a standard CD (and easier to transport to Europe!). Only a thousand of these have been manufactured, and they will probably not be reprinted, but will remain a collectorâs item.

Of the ten songs on the record, two are from Davidâs forthcoming release, Change, and the rest are songs that he has previously recorded on other CDs. Of those, three were re-recorded for this record with new production. The songs are mostly original, but the collection also includes a cover of the Police song Walking In Your Footsteps (written by Sting), Chuck Brodskyâs We Are Each Otherâs Angels and A Song of Peace, by Sibelius/Stone.
