Password protected file problems

Password protected file problems

I don't know if anyone else has noticed this but lately many of my buyers have complained that the files they have purchased have password protection on the some of the files contained within my zip files and sometimes on the zip file itself. Being that I zip all my files myself with Winzip 14 and never put password protection on a file that I sell on Tradebit I am confused why this is happening so often now.

I have even downloaded my own files that cause complaints just to double check and there are definitely no passwords required to access the zip file, and when I send the same zip file that the buyer originally purchased as an email attachment, they are able to access the entire file without any problems.

Is there some sort of issue on the tradebit server that may be causing files to be encrypted or are they being uploaded as ascii instead of binary? I'm grabbing at straws now because I have no idea why this is happening. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

mark, could you forward one of those complaints to me? we do not change the files and maybe the buyers bought from different merchants and just mailed you as one of the merchants of the basket?

Hey Ralf & Marcos,

Being a tradebit merchant for a while, I think I know exactly what this problem is...I do get emails as such from buyers

Weird as it may sound, this problem is caused because of lengthy file names + File path (destination where they save their file). Tradebit generates file names based on the title of the file. If the title is long the file name that tradebit generates is a long one as well and when they save it to their desktop, the location they save to would typically look like this D:\Documents and Settings\RobertMatthew\Desktop\LongTradebitGeneratedFileName.zip.

To avoid this problem ask your buyers to:
1) Save the file to a root directory like c:\ or d:\
2) Rename the tradebit file they have downloaded to a shorter one like "File.zip" and then extract the files.

Other such problems that pop up due to the lengthy file names issue is ...
* ) Empty Pdf files

And every time I get emails as such I instruct them to follow my above instructions and it gets fully solved.

So permanent remedy to this problem would be for tradebit to generate shorter file names ...may be restrict the file name to first 60 characters in the title or something like that

Ralf,

I just forwarded you an email with the dialogue I had with a buyer regarding this issue. The buyer made multiple purchases in the basket and had the same problem with several other sellers in this purchase. The email subject will be "Fw: Software Purchased Needs Password". Thanks for looking into this.

@pecno1

I have had the same issue with filename and filepaths exceeding the allowable character length and have always offered the exact same suggestion to my buyers to resolve the problem. However this may be a different problem, because these errors are not the result of the filepath/filename and the sending the file as an email attachment instead of as a tradebit download should not affect the files password protection status as it has for me as of late.
