number of allowed characters in displayed name

this has bugged me for years and it affects our seo.
why do some of my products allow a certain number of characters in the displayed name field, while other products allow much less.
ergo... how can i get all my products to be allowed to have a set number of allowed characters in the 'displayed name' field in my product admin?

I've also noticed this that some other sellers have titles so long they go onto 2 lines but mine is always limited to much less

Simple bug in the way that the system handles files. If you load a file that has a really long file name such as:

This manual has a really long file name to start with.pdf

the system copies the filename into the displayed name box. If its over the allowed amount of characters you can keep it and add more, if under it won't go over the allowed number of characters.
