Can I upload files in parts?
November 26, 2010 06:22AM
Hi,

Lately I'm having troubles with my files with more than 500 Mb size, some buyers reports me a lot of problems to download it or unziping it, and I don't know how to use securely the "softlinks" download mode.

I would like to know if it is possible to upload these huge files in parts (zip or rar files) or if it is not problem uploading them without ziping it, I mean, in his original format (mp3, mp4, flv, jpg, or wathever).

Thank you

Splitting up the files without changing the format is not possible (that is more a technical aspect than anything related to us)...

First: the "softlinks" mode is fairly secure. People COULD exchange links directly, but they can do that anyhow. The softlinks are just valid for 24 hrs and then are deleted from the public web and you NEED the download code to create a new one.

Anyhow:

Splitting up larger files can be done with WinRAR - an archive software, that offers you an interface to split an archive (rar) into many parts (ra0, ra1, ra2, ra...)...

If you refer to such files here:

as a video - i would strongly recommend the softlink method.... that should be enabled automatically!

Thank you Ralf… Wow! eye popping smiley surprise me that you guess precisely the file that has given me more problems… How did you know?

Anyway, besides that file I also have others that have caused problems to my buyers and I have had to splitting up the files, upload them to my hosting and then give to the buyer the direct links to downloading (double work angry smiley).

So please, clarify this doubts to me:

• It is possible to upload to Tradebit (via FTP) the partitioned file in multiple zip files? If yes, How I make to load my product with multiple archives during the uploading proccess?

• You know if there is a software for Mac that allows me to generate .rar archives from one huge file splitting it up at the same time?

• Please, describes me what is the correct procedure to activate the "softlinks" feature after a buyer email me saying that he/she can't download or decompress the files, due to downloading proccess was interrupted or decompressing proccess marks errors to him.

Thank you for your atention.

(PS. I hope that to understand my deficient English it is not being a problem for you)

Hi,

guess that was one of the bigger files, so I took it as an example ;-)

The RAR tool is available for mac:

But there is another alternative:

You might create 3 different hidden products and then create the final version out of it with a collection.

That is done by uploading smaller parts of the whole file and registering these smaller parts in the power admin as "Restricted" files. These are products that are not promoted or listed anywhere. Take these restricted products into a collection (with the pink C button) and create a new public one out of it. Your buyers then get 3 (or whatever amount of single files you used) links on a purchase.

Softlinks: That is activated by default, I think. Your users get into the download area and they get hidden links DIRECTLY to the files. If their downloads still fail, I fear something else must go wrong.
