Carl Dudley started writing and playing his classic folk rock influenced Christian music while a student at Puget Sound Christian College from 1973-1976. While working his day job in 1978, he told an interested fellow cook named Jeff that his goal was to be the most obscure Christian recording artist in the history of the world. To date, he has been largely successful in achieving that goal, although now that you have discovered his work, it remains to be seen if he will be able to continue with that success.
Carl released three albums on cassette between 1985 and 1991. Covenant was released in 1985, Walk on the Water in 1988 and I’m So Amazed in 1991. Cassettes haven’t totally gone the way of the Dodo bird, but by 1995 CD’s were the more popular format. A bunch of friends who had worn out their cassettes kept asking for CD’s, so in 1995, thanks to donations from a large number of people, the most popular 17 tracks of the three cassette albums were released on a CD, For a Life Time. The title cut was written to honor the marriage of Jim and Cathy Cummings. Jim has played most of the drum tracks and a couple of very fine lead guitar lines on Carl’s recordings. While the cassettes are out of print, MP3’s of many of the songs are available for download on the Carl Dudley and Friends web site.
Through the years bands came and went until it just became easier to call the band Carl Dudley and Friends; it seems like there are always some very talented musician friends that are willing and able to help out with a project. Those that have helped on most albums include brothers Rick Dudley on bass and backing vocals and Thom Dudley (of Raven fame and more recently as a solo artist) acoustic guitar and vocals. Jim Cummings has played drums with me since 1986 and also been one of my closest friends, (with Mark Schulman and Brian D Willis providing drums on the Covenant album), Rob Farley Mauri Macy and Jim Twogood have added the magic on the keyboards, John Standefer, Scott Hybl, Rick King, and Jess Montgomery have added guitar to supplement (read surpass) my playing, Curt Cassingham played a bass track or two, Jim Swanson, and Kent Severns were in Open Fist with me and played guitars and did vocals on a few songs. There have been many more that have helped with individual songs, mostly with vocal backing harmony.
Jesu Music is an Independent Christian recording and publishing company. All profits above and beyond those needed to fund recording and distribution will be used to support various missions around the world.
Carl is currently working on his first album since 1991 entitled Faith Hope Love. Scheduled release is Nov-Dec 2006. Pre-release MP3 files of the songs may be available at the band web site.
It is Carl’s hope that you will be encouraged in your walk with the Lord Jesus by his songs and that together we may continue to bring the good news of Christ to the world.
