22.5 MB PHP File - Platform: MP3 / All Pl

This album mixes an acoustic songwriting approach with an appreciation for a full band sound. The songs are a mix of traditional modern American folk, lo-fi, twang, mainly personal narrative lyrics, saxophone lead melodies, and the occasional drum beat.

FOLK: Modern Folk, ROCK: Americana

Details:
Throughout the years I've played in several different bands and projects, including Chunk and the Goonies, Jah Resination, Metal in the Microwave, and so on. This venture is completely my own creation and performance, playing bass, guitar, saxophone, a little keys and percussion, and all vocal parts.

I recorded, produced, and wrote "A Quiet Night in a Hectic Space" in my little apartment on an 8 track recorder. I have had several experiences recording with bands, playing just one instrument, but the process of recording several parts alone is completly different. I experimented with recording techniques and finding ways to capture the sound I prefer using certain effects and tones. What ended up happening was that I spent 9 months trying to perfect each song to my satisfaction, and I took basic acoustic songs and placed full instrumentation over them. Most songs are low-fi, psychadelic folk, twangy in nature, and with Americana esque lyrics. An exception to this would be the third track on the album, "An Artist Gone Too Soon", which has a driving, funk drum part, soul inspired horn parts, and was written after listening to a lot of Charles Wright and the Watts 103rd St Rythym Band. "An Artist Gone Too Soon" is a personal narrative about growing up in Indiana and a friend who committed suicide. Also, the song "HIFI Swingin Cowboy watching the blast" is my interpretation of twangy country, but I think it ended up sounding more like The Residents or Captain Beefheart trying to play country. The lyrics to all the songs were written very sporadically, and in differnt context. The main theme on the album is the searching for a place, something or somewhere in American, to bring a person comfort. I mainly write about: my life, what I see, what I know, what I've known...

I am heavily influenced by (but not limited to) 60's: soul, psych folk, garage rock. 50's: country, R&B, bop, and a throw in a little bit of 70's: funk, pop, and punk- as well as many other genres of music that you can see here in some of the artists that have had an everlasting influence on me: Donovan, Otis Redding, Talking Heads, the sir douglas quintet, Hank Williams, Funkadelic, Black Flag, Johnny Cash, Frank Sinatra, Rachmaninoff, Leadbelly, Thelonius Monk, Tom waits, cake, Jimmy Smith, les claypool, muddy waters, zappa, the mothers of invention, James Brown, Oscar Pettiford, Charles Wright and the watts 103rd st. rhythm band, Van Morrison, The Beatles, Elvis Presley, Elvis Costello, Bob Dylan, John Prine, Jim St. James, Beck, Al Green, Junior Parker, Curtis Mayfield, Devo, The Kinks, The Velvet Underground, The Minutemen, Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels, The dirtbombs, Bob Wills, David Bowie, The sonics, Sonic youth, Ween, Neil Young, John Coltrane, Brian Wilson, Webb Pierce...The list goes on and on...
