Details:
Written in 1998, Castel Quéribus is an organ toccata inspired by composer Jeffrey Gold''s visit to Chåteau de Quéribus in southern France during the same year. The piece is meant to capture the austere and haunting nature of this solitary castle that, although it shares an unrivaled view of the surrounding countryside, it is also visible from far away---safety and danger rolled into one. Chåteau de Quéribus was inhabited by the Cathar in the southern French region of Languedoc. Considered one of the "five sons of Carcassonne," Castel Quéribus sits high atop a precipice overlooking the surrounding valleys, and served as the last stronghold of the gnostic Cathar before they were annihilated in the Wars of Religion.
