I wrote this song on a "cold and wet November night" in 1999. In fact I had just come in out of the rain and I was indeed cold and wet. This is one of those tunes that I wrote just for the sake of writing a song. The idea was to tell a story in the style of Bob Dylan or John Prine. But as it turns out the song, like many country tunes, is about loneliness. Misery herself is a metaphor for lost love.
