Details:
Sheelin was formed in June 2008 by Fionnuala Fagan and Lucy Kerr. The innovative style of this folk duo cleverly combines a strong Irish traditional influence with contemporary popular music culture whilst displaying all the polish of their classical training.

The album, Homebird document’s a story given to Fionnuala by her grandmother, Maire De Baroid. In 1948, Maire’s parents and eight brothers and sisters emigrated to America, leaving her behind in Cork, Ireland. Even though she was only 19 years old, she refused to go with them. For this project, Fionnuala was particularly interested in telling someone else’s story. Therefore she aimed to take a different approach to song-writing by taking inspiration from the style of theatre known as, ‘Verbatim Theatre.’ This resulted in the song lyrics being constructed using only Fionnuala’s grandmother’s words which had been collected from her at interview. The five songs produced are entitled: Homebird, What Am i going to Do? Mam, Would I Ever See Her Again? and Delighted with Life. The songs should be listened to in this order for a clear interpretation of this poignant and fascinating story.

‘’On only one hearing of the songs, my impression was of very skilful editing of source material. The obvious difficulties of reforming prosaic speech to fit within the structure of a ballad were dealt with very effectively...The singing and playing was confident, perfectly in tune, and persuasive.''''
Martin Dowling, Lecturer in Traditional Irish Music Studies at Q.U.B.

''''I think the songs were beautiful...I loved that you stuck to singing them from her point of view...It will stay with me for a long time...''''
Hanna Slattne, Dramaturg at Tinderbox theatre Company

" Think you''ve stumbled on someting here. I think you''ve got the first traditional Irish music opera! ...Thank you very much for coming in....You are a breath of fresh air....its been a pleasure...''''
Gerry Anderson, BBC Radio Ulster.
