Advance Review: The members of the alt-country band The High Irons are back with "Unusual Opportunities For Young Men." After a few well-received albums (as Katy Mae) the Brooklyn, New York band has retooled and created a cool, retro-cowboy vibe that could ignite their career with Americana and alt-country audiences. The album begins with the western "Lovesick Hearts" that features an intense vocal performance. But the recording really picks up steam with the rockin'' "Carolina." This cut could be a hit on Texas country radio with its rollicking melody and memorable lyrics. "Country Hardball" has much of the same charm.
The title track offers piercing lyrics and mixes an 80s rock sound with Americana sensibilities. "Long For Your Touch" offers elements of British Invasion. However, another potential country chart hit is the Red Dirt-tinged "Message" with its easily hummable melody.
The Traveling Wilbury-esque "Stranded On the Subway" is by far the best cut on the album. The track oozes musical authenticity. Radio program directors should take notice of this new Americana gem.
The High Irons obviously traded up with its new line-up, because "Unusual Opportunities For Young Men" is a winner. In addition, three songs on the album deserve to bring these Brooklyn boys to Nashville and the country charts. Unusual opportunities, indeed.

With the departure of their drummer, the former members of the band, Katy Mae, have reconfigured and recharged with a new band, a new album, and new members. Unusual Opportunities for Young Men could be considered the last album by Katy Mae, and yet, its distinctive sound and diversity make it decidedly unique. And so ... The High Irons!

The songwriting and production partnership of Philip Doucet and Hans Gutknecht has created an album full of the multi-faceted landscape of American roots music. From the Johnny Cash rhythm of "Lovesick Hearts" to the pure rock pageantry of the title track, The High Irons have re-imagined Katy Mae as something sonically fuller and more distinct.

With no pressure to create anything other than the finest songs they could, the band turned inward to produce the album they wanted to make. Traces of The Byrds and The Beach Boys harmonies sit comfortably inside the songs "Carolina" and "Please Love Me," while piano, organ, and even a horn section support the rest of this full flavored affair.

The inception, of course, has and always will be the songs themselves. Perhaps the liberation of being in a new band has allowed the musicians to let different influences come to them more naturally. There is a development on this album that is leaps and bounds away from the core members’ previous work. Tracks such as "Except for My Bones" and "Long For Your Touch" cascade along a more fluid trajectory of blues and melody. "The Witness" and "Lose My Faith" push and pull around a heavier weight altogether, yet never lose the melodic plot, while “Country Hardball” and “Stranded on the Subway” sit in a 1975 Laurel Canyon haze.

The new approach has been made possible by the addition of new drummer and vocalist, John Riina, who brings an exciting approach to The High Irons songbook, both past and present.

You can label the band as alt-country, or country tinged rock, or alt-rock, or folk rock. But no one moniker truly fits and this is the strength of The High Irons. The respect of their musical heroes never becomes parody. The High Irons walk along the shadows of their influences—Hank Williams Sr, The Replacements, R.E.M, The Byrds, Everly Brothers—but find a way to step out into their own light.
