This collection of Polish Christmas carols serves a number of purposes. First, its intent is to serve as an archival vehicle for some of Poland and Polonia’s “lost” Christmas music. Still another reason is to introduce these songs—selections that are virtually unknown—to a new market. It is hoped that by doing so, listeners will then develop a genuine interest in Polish and Polish American music. All too often, Americans of Polish descent consider the polka their sole musical link with the land of their ancestors. While this recording does not claim to represent the musical genius of men like Chopin, Gorecki or Moniuszko, it does, however, try to capture the essence of the Polish soul which has inspired many of Poland’s greatest composers.
Of the reasons listed above (and many others), the one that stands heads above the rest is the fact that the collection embodies the dedication and talents of those involved in this project. For them, this recording quickly became a “labor of love” in the truest sense of the phrase. From the initial meetings at which songs were first selected, to the final packaging designs, hundreds of hours were donated to the project—and done so, simply, because everyone involved shares an unflagging passion for the folk music of Poland.
