In the spring of 1893, three covered wagons left a farm near Winterset, Iowa and started southwest. Two horseback riders accompanied the wagons. One of these riders was Lawrence “Sut” Speer, my great grandfather. He was making way for the Cherokee Strip Land Run, in search of his dream to establish a farm. In September of that same year, from a line of more than a thousand riders north of Stillwater, Oklahoma he raced his mule Mike to stake his claim. With success, he built a bachelor shack of native sawed lumber and broke the virgin ground with Mike and a walking plow. Our family still owns this farm west of Morrison. My father runs cattle on the land. This collection of music is dedicated to Great Grandfather Sut, and to all the other pioneers who continue to run for freedom.
