MP3 Dave Hartl & Gaijin - JAZZ: Weird Jazz

Electric, eclectric, story-telling journeys with a sense of humor and a sardonic viewpoint, an antidote to Kenny G''s so-called jazz

6 MP3 Songs
JAZZ: Weird Jazz, JAZZ: Jazz Fusion

Details:
More than fast-paced jazz, this album combines fusion''s improvisational approaches and attitude with soaring melodies, carefully constructed composition, world music aesthetics and textures from the cutting edge of sampling/synthesis technology.

Non-smooth Instrumental Jazz from the Philly scene, high energy, technical but human, an antidote to Kenny G. Jazz

A member of the jazz faculty at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia since 1991, Dave teaches jazz theory and electronic techniques as well as a musical styles and theory overview course for multimedia majors. His Charles Mingus Tribute Ensemble and Where''s One? groups have inspired scores of students and stretched the limits of their playing. He''s in charge of implementing technology at the university''s School of Music, a job that keeps him on the cutting edge of modern music technology while basing his music on the long traditions of jazz, pop, and classical.

Dave plays piano, all synthesizers, Chapman Stick, guitar, theremin, accordion, harmonica and is working on new projects blending all these sounds. Has performed jazz concerts in Philly with Phil Woods, Ray Brown, Joanne Brackeen, Trudy Pitts, Jimmy Bruno, Gerald Veasley, John Swana, John Blake, and other jazz artists. Has written, arranged, produced, and released 2 albums of original fusion instrumental music with his recording band "Gaijin" (Dave Hartl & Gaijin and Foreign Growth) and one album of acoustic jazz with his Quartet (Straight, a Head) through his production company "Foaming At the Ear Music". A member of The Jimmy Bruno Group, featured on the Concord Jazz release "Midnight Blue". Featured on synthesizers and as co-writer on John Alberti''s "Implication & Innuendo" CD on Artifex Records, Thomas Raniszewski''s "A Midnight At a Time" on Star 19 Records, and Metagroove''s "Send Us Your Children" CD.

Played keyboards for The Get Right Band, one of the first bands to combine reggae influences with the folk and rock scene; they were featured at many concerts and public affairs. Has spent the last 15 years playing every type of musical engagement including jazz concerts and clinics, pop tours (including tours of Japan as a solo pianist, as synthesist for Richard Barrett''s Three Degrees, a tour of Mexico as synthesist for LaToya Jackson, concerts with Annie Haslam''s Renaissance, and tours with Mary Wilson of the Supremes), musical and MIDI studio production, and, in performing in Philadelphia and Atlantic City hotels and house bands, has played synthesizer and piano for performers such as Smokey Robinson, Joni Mitchell, Aretha Franklin, Bo Diddley, Anthony Newley, Ben Vareen, Luci Arnaz, George Burns, Joan Rivers, Connie Francis, Phyllis Diller, Anne Margaret, Marilyn McCoo, Dom Irrera, and hundreds of other acts.

Provided synthetic orchestral textures for productions of over 50 musical shows and reviews. Most recently, Dave is working on a new CD project that attempts to blur the line between the planned and the spontaneous and between jazz and world musics. Stay tuned!
