Details:
Hit by a Bus is an exclusive melding of heavy metal and splashes of indie rock. Brought together by a high school talent show, the original line-up started off as a "shed band," using a karaoke machine as a PA, a shovel stuck in the dirt floor for a microphone stand, and extension cords lining the dirt floor, bringing forth power. Hit by a Bus has then since transformed and manifested into what they are now, creating a vivid and unique style.
In 2003, the band put together their first album, Outside the Van Door, after adding Gio whose intoxicating voice gives the band a bold and alluring sound. This first album included songs like "Speed Limit 42," their first song ever written. At this time, Hit by a Bus was a quartet with Skreech (guitar/vocals), Gio (keys/vocals), Chris (bass), and Daniel (drums) who left the group shortly after and was replaced by Josh. By the end of 2004, the band said another tearful goodbye to Chris, who moved to New York and joined a band called Rains For Days. They then welcomed N8 to take the place of Chris on bass, and at around the same time added Joe Christ as a second guitarist, thus completing the sound that you now know as Hit By A Bus.
Putting together the stunningly rocking sound they have today, each member has influenced the band through personal testimonies, influences, and lifestyles:
SKREECH, being the only original band member left, exhibits a deep understanding of musical creation and meaning. Coming from a family of generations infected with a “musically genetic disease,” he received his first guitar from Louis Guenther, a friend of the family and Moriarty local country western guitarist. Louis built the tiny instrument to Skreech''s 8-year-old frame. He has since influenced Skreech in many ways, becoming his “Obi-Wan Kenobi of guitar playing,” and staying alongside him with encouragement and ideas every step of the way. Through Louis, Skreech was introduced to Steve Mays, one of Albuquerque''s well-known guitarists and teachers. Mays later became his “Yoda of guitar playing.” It is without saying, that without the influence of these two geniuses on the young Skreech, Hit by a Bus would have a different sound entirely.
GIO has that enticing sound that can just blow you away. She is entirely full of ideas, with a vibrant and spicy outlook that brings a feminine approach to the band. It is well-known that she is the kindest person you will ever meet, carrying with her a sense of readiness that makes the wheels on the bus go round. She is the woman behind the scenes, crossing the t’s and dotting the i’s. Alongside Skreech, they put together lyrics, sounds and ideas that manifest into something beautiful and unreal.
JOSH, “The Duke,” is the leader of bad jokes and unforeseen comedy. Whether laughing at or with him, you can’t not have a good time around him. But there is a serious part to Josh that you will hear if ever you stop to listen to the reason behind the drum beat. Also playing from a young age, Josh’s late father put a drumstick in his hand as he took his first step. It is his dad’s teachings, and a dedication to his memory that brings forth that sizzling and seductive drum beat with oh such a sweeeet sound…
N8 demolishes all thought with an uncontrollable beat that uplifts and devours you to the very depth of your soul. His chill attitude makes him the definition of laid back and has continuously kept the band''s morale light and calm as times get rough. His motto, "whatever dude, I don''t even care," pretty much settles any argument.
JOE is the dark mysterious one strumming his heart into a heavy metal guitar, contributing a hardcore sound. He releases his unsuppressed passion into the music and fulfills much of the emotional output of the group. Joe has a love for being on stage, and it shows through his intensity in live shows.
Influencing artists are: The Smashing Pumpkins, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Metallica, Lamb of God, Blindside, System of a Down, Tool, Bright Eyes, Fiona Apple, Coheed and Cambria, Feels Like Sunday, Zao, and As I Lay Dying.
The band has advanced past just a high school talent show and have begun to create their hopes and dream into memories and realities. On their tour from Albuquerque, New Mexico to Weed, California, they had many memorable experiences. They recorded their Detonator EP at Radiostar Studios with Sylvia Massy (Tool, System of a Down) and Rich Veltrop (Slayer, Red Hot Chili Peppers). This album includes the self-titled track "Detonator," which strikes the meaning of what happens when you’ve HAD it. It also includes "Fil," which is a song about self-realization, and "Boy," which reminds you that there are always going to be self-absorbed, immature jerks in the world.
In all, the band’s fervent adventures throughout the years have brought them to a deeper understanding of who they are and where they are going. Though they could have been discouraged when their first "real gig ever" at Sprockets had an uneventful turn (including a bar fight and threats to the band), they took it as an incentive to accelerate in their desires.
Of course who could forget the people that have been there along the way? Hit by a Bus sends a special thanks and recognition to:
Louis Guenther; Steve Mays; Silvia and Rich from Radiostar Studios; Ace, our new manager; Pez, our totally awesome webmiester and friend; Lindsey, who has photographed a number of our shows, and been a really great personal friend; ALL our friends and family that have been really awesome and supportive; all our fans, and of course Melanie (Raven) who wrote this bio. Without all your loving support and devotion, we would not have made it all this way. THANK YOU.
