Emily''s Ashes was formed in early 2008 by pure fate. Right place at the right time is the best way to describe the beginning of this band. Two of the band members are native Floridians, another is from Massachusetts and another is from Alabama. An open mic night at a local micro-brewery in Florida was the setting for their meeting. Al and Cathy were singing at the time Mike and his wife Tani went to get a brew. Tani encouraged Mike to introduce himself to the couple and it wasn''t long before they got together to listen to some original music of Mikes. After spending some time working on original and cover tunes together they started thinking about a drummer. Mike had met Chris several years before and was impressed with the way he played drums. It wasn''t long before they all met to jam and it was clear that this was a great combination of musicians.
Mike (a.k.a. "Panco") is from Florida spending all of his life in the St. Petersburg area. He started playing guitar early, around 15 and was playing with local bands in the mid to late 1980''s. At the time they played cover tunes and established a large following of fans. He took some time off from the club scene to persue songwriting and developing his own style of playing. He penned quite a few songs over the years and his colaboration with Al and Cathy in early 2008 proved to be a great combination. His fans are still around and Emily''s Ashes had an immediate following from the first gig. Mike can rock out the crowd with his screaming guitar but is just as impressive with his classical style finger pickin on the acoustic. He keeps the band entertained with his crazy sense of humor and it comes across on stage.
Al is originally from Springfield, Ma. He started playing trumpet at just 9 years old and played several other instruments before he graduated school. He picked up bass guitar at the age of 13 and was a natural. He played in the Springfield, Ma area in some local bands and in the process learned how to play the harmonica, acoustic guitar and pretty much anything with strings. He moved to Nashville, Tn for several years where he played with several bands in that area. He had the opportunity while there to develop his songwriting skills and was fortunate enough to do a European Tour with a local Nashville artist where he entertained people in Egypt and Spain. After returning to the United Stated he did some traveling playing music at festivals and clubs and found himself in Alabama. After a brief stay he moved to Florida where he eventually met Mike and Emily''s Ashes was formed. His hard hitting vocals always get people rockin and singin along. He''s been described as a "true entertainer" that always leaves the crowd wanting more.
Cathy is from Alabama and comes from a musical family. Her parents were in a bluegrass band when she was a child and she has been singing since she can remember. Her mothers family is from the mountains of Georgia and she has relatives that have been very successful in the bluegrass industry. One of her brothers spent a lot of time writing his own songs and playing music which kept her interested in songwriting also. Over the years she has learned to play the keyboards, acoustic guitar, flute, banjo, fiddle and even had some lessons on the peddle steel guitar. She does not claim to be good on any of those and clings to her vocals as her instrument. She traveled playing hotel resorts and clubs for several years with an agency out of California and then took some time off from the music business. She finally returned to her passion and eventually moved to Florida. She''s comfortable with lead vocals as well as harmony and loves to entertain.
Chris is another native Floridian. He''s been playing music pretty much all of his life and had his first set of drums at age 12. He''s played with several local bands in Florida including a "Who" tribute band and has been on stage and played drums for some well known artists such as Foghat, Joe Walsh, Mark Farner (Grand Funk) and the Nelsons. He met Mike years before Emily''s Ashes was formed and they exchanged phone numbers after speaking. Mike was impressed with his style and was the first person he thought of when it came time to find a drummer. The first time he played with Emily''s Ashes it was as if they had been playing as a band for years. Chris has perfect meter and his hard hitting style is so great you can''t help but move your feet when he plays. He has the perfect blend of dynamics and really makes his mark in the music he plays. His style is very diverse and he''s so seasoned he can play just about any song you can name and make it sound as if he''s been playing it for years. His laid back personality was a perfect fit with the rest of the band and he''s very entertaining to watch. He is without a doubt the back bone of the group
