This recording was made in Walthamstow Assembly Hall in May 1946. The hall was a popular recording location until London City Airport was built and the hall found itself under the airport flight path.
Victor de Sabata (1892 - 1967) was an Italian conductor widely recognized as one of the most distinguished operatic conductors of the twentieth century, especially for his Verdi, Puccini and Wagner.
The London Philharmonic Orchestra had struggled through World War II and as younger musicians were demobbed from the British military they joined the orchestra and revitalised it.
