Details:
"The debut album by Materialized, featuring Grammy Award-winning keyboardist Dave Pellicciaro and drummer Dale Fanning (Living Daylights), is rooted in experimental jazz and funk, but takes flight by balancing electro-grooves with Afro-Cuban sensibilities and refined chops. Showcasing Cuban bass legend Carlitos Del Puerto and utilizing tasteful horn arrangements, the all-instrumental affair (Mixed by the great Oz Fritz –Tom Waits/Bill Laswell) hints at Thrust-era Herbie Hancock with the psych-funk workout “Flying Blind” and electric period Miles Davis with the moody “Choose Your Yestination.” The loose drums gently pushing the B3 organ on “The Brightness of Now” recalls Medeski Martin & Wood while “The Witness” feels like a sci-fi soundtrack with plinking pianos, laser keyboards and mechanical drums. Following “The SP,” an electronic banger ready for the late night dance floor, the album winds down elegantly with the patient groove and ominous horns of “Sun Can’t Hide The Dark” coming on like a funeral dirge" ~ Aaron Kayce
"Combining pop cultural fluency with the driving musicality of Brian Eno, Dave and Dale have turned out a stunner of a CD. By turns whimsical and witty, moody and atmospheric, the tunes here invest electronica with a jazzy soul" ~ Josh Sens – SF Magazine
Materialized is an ongoing musical collaboration built on the core of keyboardist Dave Pellicciaro and drummer Dale Fanning. Based in Oakland CA the band builds their energized sounds on big beats and sonic scapes then engages a revolving cast of talented comrades to keep the music fluid and growing on this strong foundation. Live shows range from a powerhouse two-man match, trios, and up to a full band with a horn section, singers, strings, dancers and??! Materialized has just released their new CD titled “Songs About Music”. Mixed by the great Oz Fritz (Tom Waits, Bill Laswell) the woven layers and rhythmic beds of the CD sound rich, big and engaging.
David Pellicciaro:
Dave Pellicciaro’s career spans disciplines and accomplishments. He’s been tapped for auditions by The Grateful Dead, Chris Isaac and The Black Crowes. He holds a Grammy for performance on Beausoleil’s “L’Amour Ou La Folie” and a BFA in music (jazz piano) from Cornish Institute. Not only is Dave one of the bay area’s busiest keyboardists but he is also a noted producer including two discs under his own name. He founded the successful Lucky Devil Sound production company, composing music and mixing audio and FX for Film and TV. Folding his knack for production into his live playing Dave builds the layered sound of Materialized on Dale’s solid beats. He’s played with everyone under the sun, has hauled a customized B3 organ around for years and isn’t about to stop.
Dale Fanning:
Called “a drummer to watch closely” by Modern Drummer Magazine Dale is versed in the rhythmic languages of Soukous and Rumba and steeped in the improvisational spirit of modern jazz. He was the principle drummer on Smithsonian record’s “Safarini; Music Of African Immigrants” while his group “The Living Daylights” twice placed the CMJ top ten, toured the U.S. and Europe and was featured on All Things Considered.
Applying elements of African rhythm and modern Jazz, along with samples and loops to an electronic, beat based approach to his music, Dale creates driving, hypnotic grooves with a distinctly human feel and spirit.
