Ola Hemphill is a unique and versatile vocalist and pianist who has performed in the metro Detroit area for several years. Her performance credits include being band leader of an all female contemporary jazz band in the 1980''s and performing as a keyboard player in a major theater gospel hit play throughout the 1990''s. She also performed as a jazz vocalist with a jazz quartet at world famous Baker''s Keyboard Lounge throughout 1997 into early 1998 and sang on a ''Motown Sings Gospel Concert'' in August 2005. Famed singers who also participated on this concert included Duke Fakir of The Four Tops, Bobby Rogers of The Miracles, Annette Sterling and Rosalind Ashford of The Original Vandellas and Al Chisholm of The Contours. In 1999 Ola was featured in the March issue of the Jazz Quarterly Magazine. Ola currently has a reputation for being one of the most serious and versatile jazz singers in the metro Detroit area. She loves to scat and attributes her precise style of scatting to several factors that include having perfect pitch, understanding and playing jazz progressions and having multiple opportunities to scat with world famous jazz musicians during jazz jam sessions. Her style of singing is also greatly influenced by her favorite jazz vocalist, famous and deceased jazz singer, Betty Carter. Ola often attends a weekly long running jazz jam session at Bert''s Market Place, Detroit, MI. The jam session is in the tenth year and Ola is one of several performers selected to host the jam session once a year. She is currently working on her first multiple song cd that''s scheduled to be released spring 2011. The gospel jazz & jazz cd, In The Mix, will feature Ola utilizing all of her vocal and piano stylings that originated with gospel music and progressed through genres of music that include rhythm and blues and now straight ahead jazz. The project will include original songs written and arranged by Ola. She has also started her own production company to present concerts, plays, musicals, etc. for music and plays she’s written. Her goal is to develop quality productions that can be presented in small and large venues.
