Details:
Thankfully The Lazy Dogs don’t live up to their name. They’re not really dogs. They’re certainly not lazy. They’re actually quite human and hard-working as evidenced by the band’s debut album “Yours to Lose.” The LP was self-produced in apartments and houses in the Kent and Akron areas of Northeastern Ohio. It carries the stories those walls could tell if they could talk, with its penchant for lyrical intimacy and musical intricacy.

Kicking off the album with “Ain’t Right,” the band comes out swinging with punchy riff-rock that’s soaring at one moment and guttural at the next. Without losing pace, “Already Crazy” uses dense jazz-voicings to create a smoky lounge atmosphere. “Say Goodbye” is an upbeat ode to change, while “Getaway Car” paints a picture of a lonesome escape through the sprawling desert. The band gives a nod to the past with the jumpy blues of “I Can’t Explain,” and gives way to a more modern approach with the anthemic “Wildflower.”

Underneath its stylistic detours, “Yours to Lose” is really a songwriter’s album at heart. It’s wholly new, but has the familiarity of an old friend. There is no gimmick; just a genuine knack for songcraft that seems natural, if not effortless. Anything but lazy.
