Who are these guys, anyway? Porter and Miller are an acoustic-based duo who have been playing together since their high school days. They’ve put together a unique blend of adult contemporary, pop, alternative, and folk with a touch of country into a musical style they like to call “acoustic with an edge”. David Porter’s songwriting showcases intelligent lyrics with compelling melodies and interesting chord progressions. His vocals range from a soft lull to an urgent soar, accompanied by both finger-style and rhythm guitar playing. Marty Miller’s talents as a multi-instrumentalist are highlighted by virtuoso bass and lead guitar playing, as well as captivating keyboards. He surrounds David’s lead vocals with both high and low harmonies, creating a sound that is both somehow new and familiar.
The most difficult thing about the music on “Creature Comforts” is how to categorize it. Listen through and you’ll find touches of The Eagles, James Taylor, Dan Fogelberg, and Harry Chapin, all blended into the Porter and Miller style. Each of the twelve tracks offers something a little different from the next, either in style, instrumentation, or arrangement, making this a cd that can be listened to time and again without getting stale.
