Romolo. The twang-ified, rock-a-delic original motion picture soundtrack.
Back from the Middle Eastern wars, Romolo, the golden troubadour, roams the spiritually bankrupt, post-apocalyptic American landscape. Dismayed by his country’s change in fortune, he drifts into the gambler’s town of Dopa Grande, where he lands a steady gig at McGrew’s, a juke joint owned by the local robber baron, Sam McGrew. As Romolo’s star rises and the money pours in, McGrew is happy. But this affection turns to jealousy when the muse Angeline spurns the powerful McGrew for our hero. Romolo is framed for murder and exiled, beginning a musical journey of rebirth and redemption.
That is the story of Romolo. And this is the soundtrack that carries its vision through song.
The project is a long-awaited return to the studio for singer-songwriter and rocker Buck Johnson, former member of the famed Johnson Boys and son to the late folk-bard, Reginald “Sassafras” Johnson.
This nine-song suite is performed by Mr. Johnson together with his band of stalwart performers, the Wagonmen. The Wagonmen include Mr. Johnson for vocals and guitar, Patrick Chamberlin on lead guitar, Kimi Tsuji on bass, mandolin and cello, and drummer Steve Tolland. The album also features guest appearances by the gifted accordionist Gary Sredzienski and Mark McElroy on keys.
Romolo also marks the first collaboration in over a decade between Mr. Johnson and his dear brother Clem, who co-produced the effort along side the legendary Jim Tierney at the Electric Cave Studios in Portsmouth, NH. Clem and Buck (along with brother Duke), were co-front men in the Johnson Boys whose albums The Fruits of Intemperance and Gone to Seed are lauded by many as alt-country masterpieces.
Brother Clem feels Romolo complements the Johnson family musical catalog nicely. “I am very proud of Buck and the album he has made,” says Clem. “Romolo holds together with a singular sonic vision and clear narrative point of view. For lover’s of the album experience, it’s a rare treat.”
For his part, Buck Johnson will not comment on any plans for a Romolo tour nor give any details about the Romolo movie currently in production in Northern California. The ever-reclusive Mr. Johnson did release the following statement: “Romolo was a true ensemble effort. There are beautiful moments throughout the recordings by all the players. I am humbled and grateful for their efforts. Our hope is that you will enjoy it.”
