It is time for By Any Means to bring their own unique form of metal to the world...

April 2008. Five men take the stage at Coda in Preston for the debut of BY ANY MEANS. Fast forward to March 2010 and a very different By Any Means is celebrating taking the honours in the final of Get in the Ring. Only two members that made that debut remain, they are joined by two other men and the only female vocalist in the whole competition. How did that happen?

â...genius headbanging grooves.â

The idea for By Any Means was simple, a heavy band with melody and groove. That was the template set out by founder members Dugald Paterson (bass) and rhythm guitarist, Shad at the tail end of 2007 as they started to write the first batch of songs and assemble the new band.

The addition of Rik Knight as lead guitarist was significant. Not only was the band able to start playing live but the writing started to become more sophisticated and diverse while the song arrangements became tighter as the band spent the rest of 2008 writing and gigging across the North West.

â...a dizzying amount of memorable riffs...â

Early 2009 saw a huge turning point for the band as it installed Rachael Bowles and Sean Green as vocalist and drummer respectively. Both were a perfect fit for the more dynamic and epic sound that BAM were growing into, raising the level of performance and skill. The band was immediately heavier and more melodic, sweeter and more aggressive.

In the summer that followed, BAM parted company with founder member Shad, allowing him time to concentrate on his music business interests such as RockâOn Promotions. But four became five again in September after the band invited Carl Whittle to join on rhythm guitar. His infectious energy gave BAM a lift both on and off stage as the By Any Means live experience started to draw attention.

â...the band seems to have found their own niche which they used to eliminate the very foundations of the building.â

As the new decade dawned By Any Means took part in Thundergroundâs battle of the bands competition â Get in the Ring. Gaining strength and support with each round BAM came out victorious, through a combination of passionate performances, depth of song writing and the fact that they sounded like no other band either in or outside of the competition.

âIt cannot be stressed enough how much this band blew the crowd away...â

Since their victory, By Any Means have continued to push forward, fuelled by the desire to carve their unique sound on the face of heavy music. There will be more songs, more gigs, more beers, more good times...

This is only the beginning...

Live Review

Right from the offset, By Any Means captured the attention of every member of the audience, mainly for doing something totally different to the previous bands. Although there was once again heavy, technical drums and talented guitar players, it all came down to the front woman.

You will often find it hard for a rock band to complement a female singerâs voice with music, but with a lead like this it canât help but sound good. Diversity is hard to find but without a doubt it was on show â scream, shout, rap and complete beautiful melody all in one single package.

It cannot be stressed enough just how much this band blew the crowd away, and a lot of that impact was down to the vocal qualities...

The band of the night goes to By Any Means for sheer brilliance and depth of vocal talent.

Rob Hollis

The band managed to pack in a dizzying amount of memorable riffs into their short set. This got large amounts of the crowd moving, with the passion the band displayed leaving a clear impression on the audience. By Any Means crossed a large amount of metal genres which gave a well balanced and entertaining set.

The winners of the night, By Any Means, followed and proved why they carry the crown. Authoritative vocals lead the rest of the band through 20 minutes of genius headbanging grooves.
