Details:
“Sally, Everything’s Changed” is a lament based upon a true story. A great flood swelled a tributary of the Missouri River back in the early 1900s--a flood that claimed the life of the songwriter’s great-great aunt and two of her children. Sick with grief, her husband turned to drink in real life, and ultimately self-harm. In the song, the bereaved man relapses, banding with highwaymen. Nothing comforts.
One of America’s great pedal steel players, Tommy Spurlock produced "Sally, Everything''s Changed" and provided the song’s understated highlights. Something of a mythic figure himself, Spurlock knows how to mine a Western theme, imbuing it with pathos and hard-won dignity. Listen to Spurlock’s background vocals in the final verse and you will hear a man inhabiting his own remorse. “Sally, Everything’s Changed.”
