When Vint and Mathilda set out to record their first album, Ghost in my Dreams, they had already been playing together in the bars and cafés of Ann Arbor and Detroit Metro area for over a year. Their goal was to capture their unique sound, without sounding overproduced. They decided to do some studio recording, as well as a recorded live performance.

The important thing was to capture the rich sound of Mathilda’s violin work melded with Vint’s classical guitar and quirky, philosophical lyrics. The combination is a surprisingly full sound given that there are only two musicians playing on most of these tracks. It is this “classical music meets Americana” sound that has set them apart from other singer/songwriters touring today. Vint and Mathilda’s music has been described as “Bob Dylan meets Vivaldi.”

Mathilda, a classically trained violinist, has been playing music since the age of four along with her mother and father and two sisters (the younger of whom plays viola for the Kansas City Symphony). A very quiet individual, the violin has always been a prominent part of Mathilda’s expression and this comes out quite clearly in her performances.

Vint has been dallying with a guitar since he was a small child, starting first with his father’s guitars and later a series of his own. However, it wasn’t until he moved to Spain in the early 90’s and bought his Spanish classical guitar, that he began in earnest to compose and write his own songs. He would occasionally perform and play his music at small venues and open mics, but never took it very seriously until he met up with Mathilda in 1996 in Ann Arbor. It was obvious from the very first time they sat down and played together that they had a unique sound that naturally complemented each other’s talents.

The live tracks on this album were recorded during a concert at the Riverside Arts Center in Ypsilanti Michigan and feature several prominent local musicians playing backup to the duo.

While this album seems to do a good job of capturing the unique sound of Vint and Mathilda, it is much more raw than their subsequent albums. Many people who have seen the duo perform live prefer this album for its simplicity. It has been compared to Billy Joel’s first album, Cold Spring Harbor, as far as production and trueness to the musicians go. Vint’s opinion of the album is a bit more ambivalent as evidenced by the fact that the duo remade “Ghost in my Dreams” (the title track) for their third album American Gypsy.

According to Vint, "there are just a certain number of songs on this album that don’t sound the way I have them written in my head. They sound like they do when we play them live, and people seem to really enjoy this, but in my mind, certain songs have a different character than we can get with just the violin, guitar and my vocals. For instance, ‘Ghost in my Dreams’ was always a gypsy rock tune in my head. It really needed a different flavor than we achieved in our live performance at the Riverside. Nonetheless, people seem to enjoy the sound we achieved on this first album. This is why I finally relented and rereleased it digitally for the first time this year (2010)."

After its initial release in 1998, this album was removed from circulation for several years due to Vint’s equivocal feelings, but due to demand it has once again been rereleased.
